Metro, Bus, Taxi and Car Hire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, you can live in Mauritius without a car, but not just anywhere. It works if you live within a few minutes&#8217; walk of a Metro Express station, between Port Louis and Curepipe, and at a push in the heart of a busy town such as Grand Baie. From a beachfront villa, you will almost always need a car: the metro only serves the centre of the island, and buses, which run everywhere, become infrequent as soon as you leave the main roads.<\/p>\n<p>In between, taxis fill the gap, and since March 2026 you can also book one through the Uber app. So when it comes to getting around Mauritius, choosing your transport goes hand in hand with choosing where you live. Its main line links Port Louis to Curepipe via Beau Bassin, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, Phoenix and Vacoas; a branch runs from Rose Hill to Eb\u00e8ne and R\u00e9duit, where Mahatma Gandhi station serves, among others, students at the University of Mauritius. The network has 22 stations, including six interchanges with buses: Immigration and Victoria in Port Louis, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas and Curepipe. It does not go to the north, west, east or south of the island, nor to the airport.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operating hours: every day from 6am to 7pm; on the Curepipe\u2013Port Louis line, trams run until 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.<\/li>\n<li>Frequency: a tram every 10 to 15 minutes on weekdays and every 15 to 20 minutes on Sundays and public holidays on the main line; at peak times, two extra trams have cut the wait to 8 to 10 minutes. On the R\u00e9duit branch, expect 10 to 15 minutes from Monday to Saturday, and 20 to 25 minutes on Sundays and public holidays.<\/li>\n<li>Accessibility: low-floor trams with a wheelchair space, and bicycle racks at stations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fares depend on where you get on and off: Rs 35 to 55 with a single ticket, Rs 32 to 52 with the MECard, a rechargeable card that takes 5 to 10% off each journey. You must tap in when you board and tap out when you get off: if a MECard is not tapped out within 60 minutes, it is charged the maximum fare.<\/p>\n<p>People who travel free on buses, including retirees aged 60 and over, pupils and students, and people with disabilities, have the same right on the metro, with a dedicated MECard. The senior MECard is collected at the Rose Hill Central ticket office on presentation of the senior citizen card and the Free Travel Bus Pass: a foreign retiree should first check whether they can obtain these documents.<\/p>\n<h2>Buses: the whole island, at their own pace<\/h2>\n<p>The bus is the only form of public transport that covers the entire island. In mid-2024, nearly 2,000 buses ran the scheduled routes: those of the National Transport Corporation (NTC), a state-owned company, those of private companies such as United Bus Service and Triolet Bus Service, and 803 buses belonging to individual operators grouped in cooperatives. The network carries more than 450,000 passengers a day, according to the Minister of Land Transport in August 2025.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fares: based on the number of fare stages travelled. The scale set in May 2022 ranges from Rs 17 for one stage to Rs 47 for the longest journeys. As a benchmark, in January 2026 the Minister of Land Transport quoted Curepipe\u2013Port Louis at Rs 51 by bus, against Rs 55 by metro.<\/li>\n<li>Payment: on board, in cash. In 2025, contactless payment was still only a plan, part of the sector reform announced by the ministry.<\/li>\n<li>Real-time tracking: the MoBis app, launched by the NTC in July 2024, shows when its buses will reach a stop and where they are.<\/li>\n<li>Free travel: pupils and students holding the card issued by the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA), senior citizens and eligible people with disabilities travel free.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Buses are frequent on the main roads, much less so on secondary routes. Before choosing a home, find the nearest stop and the time of the last bus on your daily route.<\/p>\n<h2>Taxis and apps: Uber now works in Mauritius, with licensed taxis<\/h2>\n<p>Mauritian taxis operate under a public service vehicle (PSV) licence issued by the NLTA. Since 25 March 2026, taxis from the Taxi by ala-lila service, run by the Mauritian company Logidis (IBL group), can be booked in the Uber app; only drivers holding this licence are included. Other local apps exist, such as Yugo, which connects passengers with registered taxis. These apps show the fare before the ride.<\/p>\n<p>The legal framework for these platforms has yet to be written: in reply to a parliamentary question reported on 1 July 2026, the Minister of Land Transport said that no authorisation had been requested from or granted by the NLTA, as there is no specific legislation, and that regulation was being prepared. For a taxi hailed in the street or booked by phone, agree the fare before you get in.<\/p>\n<h2>Cycling and walking: for short trips<\/h2>\n<p>Cycling remains a marginal way of getting around day to day. The national cycle network, planned for Rose Hill, Vacoas, Grand Baie and Flacq, has fallen behind schedule: at the end of 2024, only the Rose Hill works had been awarded, and part of that route had not been built. Between two villages, it is another matter: on the coast road linking Grand Baie to Pereyb\u00e8re, the lack of pavements on several stretches makes walking uncomfortable by day and dangerous at night, as our comparison <a href=\"https:\/\/real-estate-mauritius.mu\/en\/grand-baie-or-pereybere\/\">Grand Baie or Pereyb\u00e8re<\/a> explains.<\/p>\n<h2>Hiring a car: licence, driving, cost and insurance<\/h2>\n<p>For most newcomers, car hire is the right stepping stone: it lets you test your real journeys before choosing a neighbourhood, then decide whether or not to buy a vehicle.<\/p>\n<h3>Your driving licence<\/h3>\n<p>Mauritian road traffic law (Road Traffic Act, section 40) exempts holders of an international driving permit from the requirement to hold a local licence, a category that includes foreign licences given effect in Mauritius by regulation. Once you have settled, you exchange your foreign licence at the Traffic Branch of the police, providing in particular a certificate of authenticity from the authority that issued it and a residence or work permit valid for at least six months; the fee is Rs 1,500. The road network is reasonable but sometimes congested at rush hour, especially around Port Louis, and pedestrians and two-wheelers are everywhere, in towns and in the countryside alike.<\/p>\n<h3>The cost<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Short-term hire: from \u20ac22 a day for a small car from a local firm based at the airport, with lower daily rates from 7 and then 14 days.<\/li>\n<li>Long-term hire: from \u20ac564 a month for a Nissan March from the same firm, for a minimum of two months; another local firm also requires two months minimum, with unlimited mileage included.<\/li>\n<li>Fuel: retail prices are regulated, at Rs 70.65 a litre for petrol and Rs 71.25 a litre for diesel since 15 August 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These hire rates, advertised in September 2026, vary with the season and the model: always ask for a written quote including delivery, as drop-off away from the airport may cost extra.<\/p>\n<h3>Insurance<\/h3>\n<p>Third-party insurance is compulsory (Road Traffic Act, section 55). When hiring, what matters is the excess, the amount you pay yourself in the event of damage: at one local firm, it ranges from \u20ac400 for a small car to \u20ac600 for an SUV or a 7-seater, and cover is void if an undeclared driver takes the wheel or if an accident is not reported within 24 hours. Photograph the car when you collect it and when you return it, and fill in an accident report with the other driver if you have a scrape.<\/p>\n<h2>Which option suits you<\/h2>\n<h3>You are coming for a few months<\/h3>\n<p>Hire a car while you test your journeys at the times you will really make them, or settle near a station from the start if you work in the centre. A <a href=\"https:\/\/real-estate-mauritius.mu\/en\/long-term-rental-mauritius\/apartement-penthouse-mauritius\/\">long-term apartment rental<\/a> gives you time to get to know a neighbourhood before you buy.<\/p>\n<h3>You work in Port Louis, Eb\u00e8ne or R\u00e9duit<\/h3>\n<p>A home a few minutes&#8217; walk from a Metro Express station lets you do without a car during the week: Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas have direct trams to Port Louis, and Rose Hill to Eb\u00e8ne.
