Three places cover most of what a visitor wants to see: the Chamarel waterfall viewpoint, where white-tailed tropicbirds circle the cliffs and no booking is needed; Black River Gorges National Park, home to Mauritius’s surviving endemic land birds; and Ile aux Aigrettes, the only place where the pink pigeon can be seen up close. Each one requires a different kind of preparation.<\/p>\n

The tropicbird you can spot without booking a tour<\/h2>\n

The white-tailed tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus<\/em>), known locally as paille-en-queue for its long straw-like tail streamers, measures around 40 cm in body length with a wingspan of 89 to 96 cm, while its central tail feathers can stretch the whole bird to roughly 80 cm. It nests in rock crevices and cliff ledges, sites chosen for being out of reach of ground predators rather than for comfort.<\/p>\n

The female lays a single egg, incubated for 40 to 46 days by both parents, and the chick stays in the nest for 12 to 13 weeks before fledging. The most striking behaviour to watch for is the courtship flight: groups of two to twenty birds circle together above the cliffs, tail streamers swinging, a display that repeats over several weeks before egg-laying.<\/p>\n

The cliffs visible from the Chamarel waterfall viewpoint, in the southwest, are among the sites where this display can be watched with the naked eye, no binoculars or guide required, from a viewpoint open to the public. Other coastal cliffs in the south and southwest hold similar colonies, but Chamarel has the advantage of being set up for visitors, close to the Black River area<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Black River Gorges National Park, the best odds for the land-based endemics<\/h2>\n

Black River Gorges National Park, established on 15 June 1994, covers 67.54 km\u00b2 of upland forest and remains the largest protected area in Mauritius. It holds eight bird species found nowhere else in the world: the pink pigeon, the echo parakeet, the Mauritius kestrel, the Mauritius cuckooshrike, the Mauritius bulbul, the Mauritius olive white-eye, the Mauritius grey white-eye and the Mauritius fody. The park has two visitor centres and around 60 km of marked trails.<\/p>\n

The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, the organisation behind most of the conservation work on these species, regularly runs field trips along the Macchab\u00e9 forest trail to the Macchab\u00e9 viewpoint: it’s where echo parakeets and the Mauritius bulbul are easiest to approach, flying over the canopy or perched low in the trees. Bird activity drops sharply as the morning goes on, which makes an early start far more worthwhile than a midday visit.<\/p>\n

The threats to these nests are well documented by the foundation: introduced mice, mongoose and monkeys prey on eggs and chicks, which is why some areas of the park stay closed to the public or accessible only with a guide.<\/p>\n

Ile aux Aigrettes, the only place the pink pigeon lets you get close<\/h2>\n

Ile aux Aigrettes is a 26-hectare islet roughly 850 metres off the southeast coast, in Mahebourg Bay, declared a nature reserve in 1965 and managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation since 1985. Unlike Black River Gorges, access is only possible with a foundation guide: the standard ecotour combines a short boat crossing with a walking trail of around 1.5 to 2 hours through the island’s last remaining patch of coastal dry forest.<\/p>\n

It’s one of five sites where a wild pink pigeon population survives, alongside four areas within Black River Gorges National Park. The species dropped to 10 individuals in 1991, its lowest point on record, before recovering to roughly 400 birds in the wild by 2018 through a captive-breeding and reintroduction programme. Its IUCN status moved accordingly, from Critically Endangered in 2000 to Endangered in 2018, then to Vulnerable the same year. The olive white-eye and reintroduced Aldabra giant tortoises are among the other species the guided tour lets visitors see on the island.<\/p>\n

Boats leave from Pointe Jerome, a short distance from Mahebourg<\/a> and the Pointe d’Esny<\/a> residential area; spaces are limited and advance booking through the foundation or an authorised operator is required, more so in high season.<\/p>\n

The Mauritius kestrel, and why the recovery story matters<\/h2>\n

The Mauritius kestrel (Falco punctatus<\/em>) is now the country’s national bird, a status proclaimed in March 2022 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Republic of Mauritius. The choice reflects its history: the species was down to four known individuals in the wild in 1974, one of the lowest points ever recorded for a bird of prey, before an intensive captive-breeding and release programme brought numbers back up. By 2019, the population was estimated at around 400 birds.<\/p>\n

A decline in the decade following its peak led the IUCN to reclassify the species as Endangered in 2014, after a period when it had been considered Vulnerable. It remains confined to the forests, cliffs and ravines of the southwestern plateau, particularly the Black River Gorges area \u2014 the common thread running through all three sites covered here.<\/p>\n

When to go and how to behave as a visitor<\/h2>\n

Tropicbird courtship display and land-bird activity are both easiest to see between October and December, outside the hottest and most humid months. For every species, early morning remains the most productive window: rising heat later in the day sharply reduces movement and calling.<\/p>\n

None of these three outings require special gear beyond binoculars and closed shoes for the park trails. Staying on marked paths, never feeding the birds and respecting areas closed to the public directly protect nests that remain fragile, even for species whose numbers have grown many times over since the 1990s.<\/p>\n
