In the vast majority of cases, no. Most Mauritian trails are open, free and walked unguided. A guide is genuinely essential on one route only, and strongly advised on four others. The rest is a question of comfort, not necessity.<\/p>\n

This is poorly relayed information: several websites still advertise \u201ctrail access fees\u201d of over a thousand rupees. Those are private operators’ prices, never an entry ticket. You can hike in Mauritius without paying a penny.<\/p>\n

The only case where a guide is compulsory<\/h2>\n

The head of Pieter Both<\/a>, that boulder balanced at 820 metres, is not reached on foot. It is climbed on metal rungs bolted into the basalt, with ropes and a harness. That is no longer hiking: it is equipped climbing, and the safety kit is supplied by the operator.<\/p>\n

Allow around 100 dollars per person, in a very small group \u2014 often two people at most. Booking is done in advance: nothing is hired at the foot of the mountain.<\/p>\n

An important nuance most articles skip: the shoulder<\/strong> \u2014 the climb up to the flat ground below the summit \u2014 remains free and open. It is a demanding but complete outing, with Port Louis and the bay below. Many hikers stop there, and they are right to.<\/p>\n

Four trails where we firmly recommend one<\/h2>\n

The 7 Cascades, so as not to get lost \u2014 and because of the water<\/h3>\n

This is the route where a guide changes the most. The Tamarind Falls<\/a> route is unmarked and the paths multiply in the canyon: people genuinely get lost there, including with a GPS track, because the right line sometimes comes down to a single boulder.<\/p>\n

The guide also knows the swimmable pools and watches the sky. In a canyon, a shower upstream raises the water very quickly, and the catchment lies on the plateau \u2014 it can be bright sunshine at the start while it rains where the water rises. Allow Rs 1,000 to 1,500 per person.<\/p>\n

Trois Mamelles, for the final step<\/h3>\n

The mountain is short \u2014 4.5 kilometres round trip for 291 metres of ascent \u2014 and that is exactly what misleads people. The Trois Mamelles<\/a> finish with a narrow, exposed passage equipped with a rope, above the drop. The path is unmarked and crosses wooded ground where navigation needs attention.<\/p>\n

Montagne du Rempart: this is not a hike<\/h3>\n

Let us say it plainly rather than line it up with the others. Montagne du Rempart<\/a> is classified as mountaineering by mountain route databases: cable ladders, a cable bridge, drops on either side. The land is private and crosses a hunting reserve among other things. Going up without permission means entering someone’s property \u2014 and doing so without competent supervision means taking a risk that bears no relation to the other summits on the island.<\/p>\n

Le Morne, for the summit section<\/h3>\n

Contrary to what is still written, a guide is not compulsory at Le Morne Brabant<\/a>: access is free and open. But the second half of the ascent changes character entirely \u2014 the rock is climbed hands and feet, a few fixed ropes help, and there is exposure. If you are not comfortable on mountain terrain, take someone for that part, around Rs 1,000 to 1,500. Be aware too that the wardens may close the upper section in wet weather.<\/p>\n

The particular case of navigation<\/h2>\n

Two trails present no technical difficulty but pose a real navigation problem. Bambous Mountain<\/a>, in the east, has no waymarking at all and its approach crosses cane fields where every track looks the same: an error costs an hour of walking, more if it happens on the way down. La Tourelle de Tamarin<\/a> is unmarked as well, and part of the route crosses private land where local practice is to ask permission.<\/p>\n

In both cases, a GPS track downloaded in advance usefully replaces the guide. A local guide simply settles both questions at once.<\/p>\n

Everything else is done alone<\/h2>\n
