Not every Mauritian hike works for a family outing, and the stated difficulty is not the right criterion. What counts here is shade, exposure to drops, the presence of water and the ability to turn back without spoiling the day.<\/p>\n

Four trails genuinely suit young children. Two others become accessible around 8 to 10 years. The rest can wait.<\/p>\n

The four outings that work with young children<\/h2>\n

Ebony Forest, at Chamarel \u2014 shade and walkways<\/h3>\n

This is the best way in. The Ebony Forest reserve<\/a> offers self-guided trails from 2.3 to 6.1 kilometres, on waymarked and maintained ground, in the shade of a replanted ebony forest. A raised walkway is covered on a guided visit of about thirty minutes, offered every hour from 9.30 am to 4 pm.<\/p>\n

Entry is free under 4, Rs 250 for a resident child aged 5 to 17, Rs 370 for a non-resident. The optional climb to Piton Canot adds around 140 metres of ascent and an hour round trip: keep it for children already used to walking.<\/p>\n

La Vall\u00e9e de Ferney, short route \u2014 five kilometres, almost flat<\/h3>\n

The first of the four routes at La Vall\u00e9e de Ferney<\/a> is 5 kilometres for only 75 metres of ascent, in one hour to an hour and a half. It runs along the valley floor, between native forest and watercourses, on waymarked paths. Java deer are regularly seen, which is usually enough to motivate the smallest walkers.<\/p>\n

Rs 100 for a resident child aged 5 to 12, Rs 250 for a visitor. Watch the timing: activities close at 2 pm, even though reception stays open until 5 pm. Arriving after lunch means arriving too late.<\/p>\n

Signal Mountain \u2014 a tarmac road above Port Louis<\/h3>\n

Signal Mountain<\/a> is the most accessible outing on the island: a tarmac road, closed to cars by a chain, with no technical section and no navigation problem. You climb at your own pace and come back down the same way. Free and open access.<\/p>\n

One reservation all the same: a climb is still a climb, and field reports range from an hour and a half to three hours round trip. Set off early or late in the afternoon \u2014 the tarmac road throws back the heat in the middle of the day.<\/p>\n

\u00cele d’Ambre by kayak \u2014 the outing done sitting down<\/h3>\n

The kayak trip at \u00cele d’Ambre<\/a> suits children from age 5 according to operators, with a dedicated child price \u2014 around \u20ac29 against \u20ac41 for an adult on the half day. Seven kilometres of paddling on a sheltered lagoon, equipment provided, a guide present, and mangrove channels you will not see anywhere else from land.<\/p>\n

It is also the only one on this list where tiredness is not measured in metres of ascent.<\/p>\n

From 8 to 10 years<\/h2>\n

Le Pouce \u2014 the first real mountain<\/h3>\n

Le Pouce<\/a> is the hike we recommend for a first summit: 3.8 kilometres round trip, two to three hours, on a path waymarked in blue and white \u2014 a rarity on the island. The only section requiring attention is a short rock step below the \u201cthumb\u201d itself. Children used to walking, aged 8 to 10, get up it without trouble.<\/p>\n

The summit is windy and the path largely exposed: hat, sunscreen and a litre and a half of water per person, even for two hours of walking.<\/p>\n

Le Morne Brabant, as far as the plateau only<\/h3>\n

Here is a point almost nobody mentions, and it matters: at Le Morne Brabant<\/a>, children are not permitted beyond the end of the plateau<\/strong>, about 2.3 kilometres from the start. This is not a recommendation, it is a site rule \u2014 the upper section is too technical and exposed.<\/p>\n

The good news is that this first half already makes a very fine half day: a wide, steady track, and after forty minutes the lagoon appearing below with \u00cele aux B\u00e9nitiers in the distance. Plan the family outing up to that point, and remember the gate closes at 4 pm.<\/p>\n

What to avoid as a family<\/h2>\n

Three categories of trail are unsuitable, whatever the child’s level.<\/p>\n

Exposed ridges.<\/strong> Lion Mountain<\/a> and the Trois Mamelles<\/a> include sections climbed with hands above the drop, the latter with a rope in place on the last twenty metres.<\/p>\n

Unmarked routes.<\/strong> Bambous Mountain<\/a> requires a GPS track and navigation across cane fields where every track looks the same: an error costs an extra hour of walking, which a tired child does not forgive.<\/p>\n

The canyon.<\/strong> At the 7 Cascades<\/a>, the issue is not difficulty but the risk of flash flooding: the catchment lies upstream, on the plateau, and it can rain where the water rises while the weather is fine at the start.<\/p>\n
