The part that trips people up isn&#8217;t the flight \u2014 it&#8217;s the health timeline.<\/p>\n<h2>The rule: an import permit, issued before departure<\/h2>\n<p>No animal may be shipped to Mauritius without an import permit from the Division of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, along with an International Veterinary Certificate signed by the official vet authority in the exporting country. Applications go to petimport@govmu.org, with a separate form for each animal.<\/p>\n<p>For dogs, the Division recommends starting the application at least three months before departure. The lab is also expected to send a copy of the results directly to the Division.<\/p>\n<h3>Extra tests required for dogs<\/h3>\n<p>On top of the rabies test, a dog must test negative for <em>Ehrlichia canis<\/em> by indirect fluorescent antibody test (1:40 dilution) within 45 days of departure, and negative for <em>Brucella canis<\/em> by an agglutination test. Neither test applies to cats.<\/p>\n<h3>Routine vaccinations<\/h3>\n<p>A dog needs to be current on Distemper, Infectious Hepatitis, Leptospirosis and Canine Parvovirus, with the last booster at least two weeks before departure. A cat needs to be vaccinated against feline enteritis, feline rhinotracheitis and feline calicivirus, with the last booster given between fourteen days and twelve months before departure.<\/p>\n<h2>Dog breeds that are banned or restricted<\/h2>\n<p>Nine breeds are barred from entering Mauritius outright, under the fourth schedule of the Animal Welfare Act 2013: American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Blue Nose Pit Bull, Red Nose Pit Bull, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and Boerboel.<\/p>\n<p>A separate &#8220;dangerous dogs&#8221; list exists too (first schedule, section 2J), covering breeds including the Alaskan Malamute, Bull Mastiff, Cane Corso, Dobermann, Kangal, Neapolitan Mastiff, Presa Canario, Rhodesian Ridgeback and Rottweiler. For these, only a pure-bred animal can be imported \u2014 crossbreeds aren&#8217;t accepted.<\/p>\n<h2>The flight: cargo only, never the hold, never the cabin<\/h2>\n<p>The official guidelines are explicit: every pet entering Mauritius must travel as manifest cargo \u2014 not in the cabin, and not as excess checked baggage. In practice that means booking through the airline&#8217;s cargo division or a freight forwarder who specialises in live animal transport, handles the paperwork, books the space and works to IATA crate standards.<\/p>\n<p>At least four days before arrival, the flight number and arrival time must be emailed to the Division. On the day, a local representative \u2014 a customs broker or agent \u2014 has to be physically at the airport for clearance. If nobody shows up, the animal risks being put straight back on the return flight, at the owner&#8217;s cost.<\/p>\n<h2>Arrival in Mauritius: quarantine and what happens next<\/h2>\n<p>Every imported pet goes through a minimum five-day quarantine at the R\u00e9duit quarantine facility, no matter where it flew in from. Release only happens once every document required under the permit has been checked \u2014 originals or certified true copies.<\/p>\n<p>Visiting hours run Monday to Saturday, 9am\u201311am and 1pm\u20132.30pm, and Sundays and public holidays 9am\u2013noon. Food \u2014 and litter, for cats \u2014 has to be supplied by the owner. There&#8217;s no resident clinical vet on site: if the animal needs treatment, a private vet can be called in at the owner&#8217;s expense, or the animal can be taken to a clinic under the Division&#8217;s supervision.<\/p>\n<h2>What it actually costs<\/h2>\n<p>The official fees are fixed and modest compared with the rest of the move: Rs 500 import fee per animal, Rs 500 veterinary clearance fee, then Rs 15 per day of quarantine for kennel or cattery space \u2014 roughly Rs 1,075 for a five-day stay.
