The University of Mauritius, in R\u00e9duit, says it plainly on its own website: “as the University is non-residential, students will have to make their own accommodation arrangements.” In practice, that means renting a studio, flat or shared house in one of the towns around the campus, in Moka itself or in a neighbouring town reached by the Metro Express or bus. R\u00e9duit has no student halls of residence<\/h2>\n

The public university, whose registered address is “R\u00e9duit 80837, Mauritius”, is officially non-residential: no campus dormitory, no waiting list for a room. Its International Affairs Office keeps an updated list of recommended landlords, sent to international students on request, but finding a place and signing the lease is left to the student or their family. Some private institutions elsewhere on the island, such as Curtin Mauritius, do run an actual on-campus residence for their students \u2014 R\u00e9duit is simply not built that way, and it is the first thing to factor in before comparing rents.<\/p>\n

Realistic neighbourhoods around campus<\/h2>\n

R\u00e9duit sits in the Moka district, on the central plateau, roughly halfway between Port Louis and Curepipe. None of the towns below are on the other side of the island: all of them are 10 to 25 minutes from campus by Metro Express or bus.<\/p>\n

R\u00e9duit and Moka itself: on the university’s doorstep<\/h3>\n

Living in Moka, or in the small locality of R\u00e9duit that surrounds the campus, removes the daily commute entirely. It is also the most residential of the surrounding areas, with the University, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, the Open University and the official State House as immediate neighbours. Rental supply here is narrower than in the busier commercial towns nearby: it is mostly small residences and houses split into flats, rather than large apartment blocks.<\/p>\n

Quatre Bornes: the widest choice, one Metro stop away<\/h3>\n

Quatre Bornes is the liveliest town on the plateau, with a market running Monday to Saturday (vegetables on Wednesday and Saturday, clothing and textiles several days a week), plenty of shops, and a rental market far wider than R\u00e9duit itself, from studios to family-sized flats<\/a>. It is the most common compromise for a student who wants both an easy-to-find home and a real neighbourhood outside lecture hours.<\/p>\n

Rose-Hill and Beau-Bassin: well connected, wider price range<\/h3>\n

Rose-Hill is the terminus of the Metro Express main line and the interchange for the branch to R\u00e9duit: a student living here simply changes trains to reach campus. Beau-Bassin, right next to Rose-Hill, adds more choice at generally lower rents for an equivalent flat, in exchange for a slightly longer trip.<\/p>\n

\u00c9b\u00e8ne: practical if you share with someone who works there<\/h3>\n

\u00c9b\u00e8ne, the cybercity between Rose-Hill and R\u00e9duit, is first and foremost an office hub. It mainly suits a student sharing a home with a partner or flatmate who works there, since the ride to campus is direct, with no change of train. Getting to campus: Metro Express and buses<\/h2>\n

The Metro Express branch linking Rose-Hill to R\u00e9duit via \u00c9b\u00e8ne runs for 3.4 km; it was built at an announced cost of Rs 4.5 billion and ends within a short walk of campus, with its terminus station serving the University, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute and the Open University directly. From Rose-Hill, that branch connects to the main line running the length of the central plateau to Port Louis and Curepipe: a student living in Quatre Bornes, Beau-Bassin, Vacoas or even Curepipe can reach R\u00e9duit with a single change, at Rose-Hill. Buses fill in the routes the Metro does not cover directly, especially from more outlying towns.<\/p>\n

What to budget for moving in<\/h2>\n

There is no reliable price series that isolates student studios or shared rooms near R\u00e9duit from the rest of the Mauritian rental market: available listings mix family homes, furnished flats aimed at expatriates and short-term rentals, which makes a genuine “student” price range impossible to source responsibly right now. What can be checked, on the other hand, are the entry costs that apply to any lease in Mauritius, regardless of the size of the property: a security deposit of one month’s rent (sometimes two, depending on the landlord), agency fees equivalent to one month’s rent plus VAT charged to the tenant, and, if the property has never been connected before, official utility connection fees: around Rs 750 plus a deposit of Rs 200 to Rs 1,200 for a single-phase electricity connection (CEB), and Rs 500 in admin fees plus Rs 2,200 in installation fees for water (CWA), with no deposit required. On Westimmo’s long-term rental listings<\/a> surveyed in September 2026, a three-bedroom flat rents for around Rs 53,500 a month: a studio or a room in a shared house, being smaller, comes in below that level, but the exact figure depends on the property and is worth checking listing by listing rather than against a general average \u2014 including on the agency’s lower-budget listings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shared house, furnished studio or unfurnished flat: what to check before signing<\/h2>\n

A furnished lease in Mauritius falls under the Civil Code rather than the law governing standard residential tenancies: the notice period, for instance, is not set by statute and has to be written into the contract rather than assumed. Before signing a studio or a room for the academic year, a few things are worth checking every time: the exact list of furniture included, which should be attached to the lease rather than only mentioned verbally; who pays for electricity, water and internet on top of the rent; the exact length of the lease and whether it can be ended early if the semester finishes sooner than planned; and a dated, signed inventory of the property’s condition at move-in, the only real proof if the deposit is disputed at the end.<\/p>\n

R\u00e9duit or Quatre Bornes: two different logics<\/h2>\n

The choice between the two most common options is not just about rent. R\u00e9duit and Moka suit a student who wants to cut commuting time to a minimum and lives mostly on the campus’s rhythm: little noise, little nightlife, but the lecture hall a short walk or one Metro stop away. Quatre Bornes suits someone who wants a real neighbourhood outside class hours, more choice of housing for the same budget, and accepts a short but real daily trip to campus in return.
