Just two species grow here: the red mangrove, Rhizophora mucronata, and the rarer Bruguiera gymnorhiza. They shelter young lagoon fish, trap sediment and take the force out of the swell. Since 2023, the law bans cutting or damaging them without authorisation.

How much mangrove is left in Mauritius?

The figures differ by source and date. A 2009 classification report cited by the Association pour le Développement Durable (ADD) put the total at around 145 hectares. The Mauritius Mangrove Atlas, produced by the University of Mauritius from field surveys and satellite imagery (May 2026 version), maps about 244.5 hectares across seven coastal districts, with a margin of error of roughly 10%. A fair summary is somewhere around two hundred hectares.

According to the Atlas, three districts hold most of it: Rivière du Rempart and its islets (about 92.8 ha), Flacq and its islets (about 60.6 ha) and Grand Port (about 55.7 ha). Together they account for nearly 86% of the mapped area. The Atlas also notes that mangrove once covered more than 2,000 hectares, so the loss has been severe.

Which species grow in Mauritius?

Only two mangrove tree species have been recorded. Rhizophora mucronata, with its stilt roots reaching down into the water, is by far the dominant one and often forms pure stands. Bruguiera gymnorhiza is less common; the ADD reports it at Ferney and Mahébourg, among other places.

Where can you see mangroves in Mauritius?

The east and south-east coasts are the best bet. The ADD names Trou d’Eau Douce, Pointe d’Esny, Poste Lafayette and Poste de Flacq, plus Ilot Brocus and Ile aux Cerfs, and says the densest forests are at Maconde.

Pointe d’Esny, near Mahébourg: one of the largest wetlands on the island and Mauritius’s third Ramsar site. It has both mangrove species, migratory birds and Zornia vaughaniana, a critically endangered plant. Our guide to living in Pointe d’Esny and Mahébourg describes the village, and the walking guide to Mahébourg helps you combine the two in one trip.

Ile d’Ambre, in the north-east: the guided kayak trip covers about 7 km and winds through the islet’s mangrove belt. Operators describe it as suitable for beginners; one of them restricts it to fit visitors aged 12 and over. Practical details are on our page about kayaking to Ile d’Ambre.

You explore a mangrove by pirogue, by kayak or from a boardwalk. The muddy ground is fragile and the roots do not stand up to trampling, so stick to the paths and routes provided.

Why mangroves protect the coast

The tangle of roots slows the swell, holds sediment in place and limits shoreline erosion. The Commonwealth, which ran a planting day with Air Mauritius at Pointe d’Esny in March 2018 (about 500 propagules), describes mangroves as a natural defence against erosion and a local buffer against flooding.

They are also nurseries. The ADD says roughly 80% of Mauritius’s commercial fish depend on mangroves when they are juveniles. That is an association’s estimate rather than an official statistic, but it shows how closely the lagoon fishery is tied to them. The ecosystem sits right next to the one we describe in our article on the coral reefs of the Mauritian lagoon: coral, seagrass and mangrove work together.

Finally, they store carbon. A 2022 study in Southern Forests measured a total ecosystem stock of about 402 to 428 tonnes of carbon per hectare at Ferney and about 188 to 190 at Pointe d’Esny. The gap shows that mangroves are not all alike, and the authors call for wider studies.

What threatens them

The ADD lists cutting for firewood, construction, coastal development and boat channels. The Atlas adds illegal cutting for fuel and boat building, coastal squeeze (mangroves cannot retreat inland once the shore behind them is built up) and the impact of the MV Wakashio oil spill on the south-east coast. The ADD also points to sea-level rise, floods and storm surges.

On the restoration side, the Ministry of Fisheries launched a planting programme in 1995: about 214,000 seedlings between 1995 and 2004 over some 13 hectares, with a survival rate above 80% according to the ADD. Fishers’ associations and NGOs have since taken up the work, such as the Grand Sable women’s planters’ association.

What the law says

Section 20(3) of the Fisheries Act 2023 (Act No. 15 of 2023) prohibits anyone, without authorisation, from cutting, lopping, removing, relocating, transplanting or otherwise damaging a mangrove plant, seagrass or coral, or from getting someone else to do so. The same section says that breaching this prohibition is an offence. Section 21 also lets the supervising officer serve a stop order on any activity or development in the maritime zones that destroys mangroves without authorisation.

In practice: do not cut, trim or backfill a mangrove, even to open up a view or a path to the water, without first getting the right authorisation.

What this means for you

If you are visiting, a kayak trip to Ile d’Ambre or a stop at Pointe d’Esny is enough to understand what a mangrove is. Keep your hands out of the water, do not pull up propagules and go with a guided operator.

If you live or want to live on the east or south-east coast, mangrove is part of the landscape at Pointe d’Esny and at Poste Lafayette, where it acts as a buffer. Browse our page on real estate in Pointe d’Esny to see what is for sale and to rent along this shoreline.

If you are looking for land or a house on the lagoon, check what grows on the plot and right next to it before anything else. If mangrove lines the boundary, a clear path to the water would need authorisation, and may not be possible at all. A low shoreline also calls for the risk checks set out in our article on flood risk before buying property, and you will find market benchmarks on our Mauritius property prices page.

Sources and
