Living in Flic en Flac means a beach town where you will need a car and where noise depends heavily on the street. In return you get one of the longest public beaches on the island, a calm lagoon, the dry west coast, and Cascavelle a few minutes away for the big shop. The village has grown: 3,917 residents at the 2022 census, up from 2,197 in 2011.<\/p>\n

A beach village, not a town<\/h2>\n

Flic en Flac runs along a public white-sand beach, about 8 km long according to an expat guide. The seafront has the restaurants, dive centres, hotels and small shops; behind it sit residential estates and gated developments. It lacks the calm of Albion<\/a> and the planned layout of Cascavelle<\/a>. It is a place people live in all year, and weekends and public holidays are much livelier than weekdays.<\/p>\n

Noise depends on the address<\/h3>\n

Residents disagree. On an expat forum one person says friends moved twice because of noise, while another owned two homes in the village and never had a problem. Both can be right: a development set back from the coast road is nothing like a flat above the restaurants. Visit on a Saturday night before you sign.<\/p>\n

A dry climate with a hot summer<\/h2>\n

The Medine station, the west reference for the Mauritius Meteorological Services, records about 780 mm of rain a year for 1971\u20132000. Between July and October only 12 to 17 mm falls each month, and February is the wettest at about 182 mm. Average daily maximums reach 30.4 \u00b0C in January and 25.8 \u00b0C in July, with an average July minimum of 17.0 \u00b0C. Winters are mild and dry, summers hot, so expect to air-condition the bedroom and pick an orientation that shades the afternoon sun.<\/p>\n

Shops and daily life<\/h2>\n

The village has an Intermart, which stocks imported products, a Winner\u2019s, artisan bakeries and a market for fruit, vegetables and fish. MCB, SBM and ABSA have branches in Flic en Flac or in Cascavelle, about 10 minutes away according to an expat guide. For a hypermarket or shopping mall, you drive to Cascavelle. Your budget depends on your habits. One guide lists 25 to 50 Rs for a dholl puri, 150 to 300 Rs in a local canteen and 450 to 900 Rs in a Creole seafront restaurant. These are indicative observations, not official prices.<\/p>\n

Healthcare and emergencies<\/h2>\n

An expat guide lists a medical centre, a clinic for routine care and two or three pharmacies in the village. For specialist emergencies, Apollo Bramwell in Moka is about 25 minutes away and Wellkin Hospital about 30, according to the same guide, and traffic changes those times. If someone in the family needs regular follow-up, factor the drive into your choice of address.<\/p>\n

Schools and families<\/h2>\n

Flic en Flac has few international schools. Most families use free Mauritian state schools or arrange transport to a school further away. One resident parent describes school vans leaving at around 7 am for a 45-minute to one-hour run to the Lyc\u00e9e des Mascareignes in Moka. Getting around: by car, and rush hour<\/h2>\n

You drive. The coast is flat and cycling works within the beach area, but shopping, school and work all mean a car. One guide gives 25 to 30 minutes to Port Louis (20 km) outside peak times; residents on the west coast talk of 40 minutes to over an hour in the morning rush between 7 and 9 am. The bus to the capital takes 50 to 60 minutes and costs about 50 Rs: workable, but not for every day. The same guide puts Tamarin at 10 to 15 minutes and the airport at 35 to 40.<\/p>\n

Flic en Flac, Tamarin or Albion<\/h2>\n

Next to Tamarin<\/a>, Flic en Flac is livelier and easier on the budget: one guide rates it cheaper than Tamarin and Grand Baie, while some residents describe Tamarin as a little more peaceful. Who Flic en Flac suits, and who it does not<\/h2>\n

It suits a retiree or couple who want the beach on foot, a remote worker, a diver or kitesurfer (La Preneuse is about 5 minutes away), and a family with young children who value a calm lagoon. It suits less anyone who wants to do everything on foot without a car, who needs a full range of services in the village, or who wants total silence on the seafront. Cascavelle or Albion serve those people better.<\/p>\n
