Which Ferney trail should you choose?
This is the estate that suits the widest range of people, because it offers four levels on the same site. The short route is 5 kilometres for 75 metres of ascent: children who can walk manage it. The longest reaches 18 kilometres and 970 metres of ascent, which makes it one of the big walking days on the island.
The trails are waymarked and can be walked without a guide, although accompanied visits are offered. The reserve covers two hundred hectares of native forest at the head of Grand Port bay.
Java deer are regularly seen here, and the reserve works on preserving endemic species you will not find anywhere else on the island.

The route
Four routes leave from the same welcome point and separate gradually into the valley, from flat ground to serious ascent.
Route 1
Five kilometres along the valley floor, almost flat, between native forest and watercourses. One hour to an hour and a half.
Route 2
Eight kilometres, 178 metres of ascent, two hours forty-five. The loop lengthens without ever becoming demanding.
Route 3
Thirteen kilometres and 530 metres of ascent. The path gains height on the slopes, with views over Grand Port bay.
Route 4
Eighteen kilometres and 970 metres of ascent, five to six hours. This is a full walking day.
Access and parking
Getting to the trailhead
The estate is at Ferney, in the district of Grand Port, at the head of the bay, a few minutes from Mahébourg. It is open seven days a week.

When to go
Best season
May to November — the austral winter makes the long routes considerably more comfortable.
Essential timing
Set off before 2 pm — activities close at 2 pm, even though reception stays open until 5 pm.
Avoid
The valley floor after rain — it turns muddy; the short route remains walkable.
