Is Corps de Garde a hard hike?

It is not a first hike. The GPS track records 7.2 kilometres as a loop for 633 metres of ascent and a high point at 720 metres — around three hours out, of which two and a half are actual walking.

The gradient bites from the very first metres and barely lets up; several rock steps are taken with hands as well as feet. The path itself, on the other hand, is busy and easy to follow: white stones laid on the ground mark the way up to the ridge.

No entry fee, no guide needed. The catch comes down to one word: shade. This slope has almost none, which makes your start time the single most important decision of the day.

The route

A short but steep climb, then an open ridge from which the eye takes in the whole central plateau and, on a clear day, the sea on both sides.

01

The start

The path leaves from Stanley, above Rose Hill, where a handful of roadside spaces allow you to park. There is no warm-up: the gradient is there from the first metres.

02

The climb

The route alternates between earth sections and rock steps where hands come into play. White stones on the ground serve as markers and the line is obvious.

03

The ridge

At 720 metres the ridge opens onto Quatre Bornes and Vacoas below, the Moka range to the north, and in clear weather both coasts of the island.

04

The southern viewpoint

A few minutes beyond the summit, a second belvedere opens the view south. The return uses the same slope.

Access and parking

Getting to the trailhead

The trailhead is at Stanley, on the slope overlooking Rose Hill. The mountain is visible from the road, which helps in spotting where the path begins.

Parking

Only a few roadside spaces, immediately next to the start. Come early, especially at weekends: the space fills quickly.

When to go

Best season

May to November — the austral winter brings bearable temperatures and far better visibility.

Best time of day

Before 8 am — the climb is then done in the cool, on a slope that becomes punishing by mid-morning.

Avoid

The day after rain — the earth on the slope slides and the rock sections become much less safe.

Frequently asked questions

Is Corps de Garde suitable for beginners?

Not really. The hike calls for decent fitness: 633 metres of ascent on a path that climbs from the outset, with steps where you use your hands. A regular walker gets through it without particular trouble.

Do you need a guide for Corps de Garde?

No. Access is free and open, and the path is marked with white stones up to the ridge. The line is obvious and the trail is well used.

Is there water or shade along the route?

Neither. The slope is almost entirely exposed and there is no refreshment point: set off with two litres of water per person.

How high is Corps de Garde?

720 metres. The mountain overlooks Rose Hill and the whole central plateau.
