Do you need a guide, and how hard is it?
No, a guide is not compulsory: access is free and open. This is the most poorly relayed fact online, where older articles still claim the opposite. The hike does have to be earned, though. The first half, up to the plateau, is a broad and steady walk most people handle without trouble. The second half is another matter: you climb the rock using hands and feet, a few fixed ropes help on the steepest moves, and there is real exposure. If you are not sure-footed on mountain terrain, take a guide for that part — budget Rs 1,000 to 1,500 per person. Bear in mind that wardens may close the upper section in wet weather, when the rock becomes genuinely slippery.
The route, section by section
From the gate, a broad track rises gently through the dry vegetation of the western slope. You gain height almost without noticing and, after some forty minutes, the lagoon appears below with Île aux Bénitiers in the distance. This is where the intermediate plateau lies — a natural turnaround point for many: the view is already magnificent and the ground is safe.
Beyond it, the terrain changes completely. The path steepens, rock replaces earth, and hands come into play. This section is graded like a demanding alpine hike — it is not long, but it calls for confidence. It leads to the summit cross, then to the viewpoint that made the place famous: the lagoon in shades of turquoise, and the optical illusion of an "underwater waterfall" formed by the sandbanks offshore.
One point nobody mentions: children are not allowed beyond the end of the plateau, roughly 2.3 km from the start. Plan the family outing up to that point — it still makes a beautiful half-day.
Access, opening hours and parking
The trailhead sits at the end of the road running along the peninsula, on the western side, at a gate. Parking coordinates: -20.46001 / 57.32728. The gate opens at 7am and closes at 4pm, with the last ascent allowed around 2.30pm — come in the morning, which is far more pleasant than the midday heat anyway. In cyclonic or heavy-rain conditions the site simply closes.
Entry is free. Parking is at the foot of the trail; the site is managed, so you are not left on your own.
When to go
From May to November, during the austral winter: dry air, 20 to 25 °C, stable rock. September to November is the perfect window. In summer (December to April), start at dawn to avoid the heat, and give up on the upper section after a shower — that is precisely when accidents happen.
⚠️ The costly mistake: setting off in the early afternoon. The gate closes at 4pm and the last ascent is allowed around 2.30pm: many visitors turn up at 1pm thinking they have the day ahead, only to be turned back or to finish in a rush. Here, you start in the morning.

The mountain is more than a summit: it is the foremost memorial to slavery in the Indian Ocean, UNESCO-listed since 2008, and the Slave Route Monument can be visited at its foot. At sea level, the peninsula is home to the One Eye kitesurfing wave and a magnificent public beach facing the sunset. La Gaulette village and the shops of Black River are about twenty minutes away.
