A professional, as defined by the Immigration Act, is a foreign national employed in Mauritius under an employment contract and registered as such with the Economic Development Board:
- A professional must earn a basic monthly salary of at least MUR 60,000.
- For professionals in the sector of information and communication technology (ICT), business process outsourcing (BPO), pharmaceutical manufacturing and pharmaceutical and food processing, the basic monthly salary must be at least MUR 30,000.
- Professionals may also apply for a short-term occupancy permit for a period not exceeding 9 months. period not exceeding 9 months. This permit can only be extended once for a period not exceeding 3 months.
Right to invest for professionals
1. A business occupancy permit holder may invest in any business provided that:
– he/she is not employed in the company
– that it does not manage the company
– they do not receive a salary or benefits from the company.
2. Without prejudice to the foregoing, a professional may hold shares in a business in which he or she is employed, provided that the licensee is not the owner.
To be noted:
1. An application for a work permit in the professional category must be submitted by the employer (either the director or HR representative) on behalf of the professional.
2. The employment contract, duly signed by both parties, must clearly state the following: the applicant’s full name as it appears on the passport, the name of the company, the job title, the duration of the employment contract and the basic monthly salary.
