Living in Mauritius with Kids: Where to Raise a Family

Living in Mauritius with kids starts with two addresses: the school you have in mind and the place where the parents will work. The central plateau (Moka, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas-Phoenix, Floreal, Curepipe) is the only area that brings together full schooling in both the French system and international programmes, two private hospitals with emergency, maternity and paediatric care, and the Metro Express to Port Louis. It also has the cheapest three-bedroom apartments in our listings, from Rs 30,000 a month. The trade-off is the weather: it gets two and a half times as much rain as the west coast.

For raising a family in Mauritius by the lagoon, the north (Grand Baie, Pereybère, Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches) and the west (Tamarin, Black River, Flic en Flac) offer the sea on your doorstep and full international schooling through to the International Baccalaureate, but no French lycée and no metro: a teenager in the French system has to travel to Moka or Curepipe for the final years of secondary school. In the east, the international school at Beau Champ only takes the youngest primary classes so far.

Four areas compared on what matters to a family

Rents: asking prices on Westimmo’s long-term rental listings on 17 September 2026, for three bedrooms or more, not market averages. Rainfall: 1971-2000 annual average at the station the Mauritius Meteorological Services use for each region.

At the exchange rate shown on these listings, Rs 100,000 is about 1,830 euros. Two other family rentals, at Haute Rive (north-east) and Beau Vallon (south-east), fall outside these four areas.

The central plateau: Moka, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas, Floreal, Curepipe

This is the only one of the four areas where a child can go through every year of school without moving, in the French system or on an international programme. Lycée La Bourdonnais in Curepipe runs from nursery to the end of secondary; in Moka, École du Centre–Collège Pierre-Poivre runs from nursery to lower secondary, and Lycée des Mascareignes takes over for the final years. On the international side, Le Bocage International School at Mount Ory (Moka) leads to IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate; for primary, Clavis International Primary School (IB programme) has a campus in Moka, and Brightfield International School, which teaches in English, has campuses in Vacoas, Phoenix and Moka among others.

C-Care Wellkin, on the Royal Road in Moka, and C-Care Darné in Floreal both have 24-hour emergency departments, a maternity unit and a paediatric and neonatal service. In the public sector, Victoria regional hospital in Candos added a 24-hour walk-in paediatric clinic in 2024-2025, according to the Ministry of Health’s annual report.

The Metro Express links Curepipe to Port Louis through 20 stations, including Floreal, Vacoas, Phoenix, Quatre Bornes and Rose Hill, with a train every 10 to 15 minutes from Monday to Saturday, from 6 am to 7 pm and until 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays (full timetable in our guide to getting around Mauritius). A parent working in the capital, or a teenager who gets around independently, can manage without a car during the day, but not in the evening.

The trade-off is the climate. At Vacoas, the reference station for the centre of the island, an average of 1,996 mm of rain falls each year, spread over 179 days with more than 1 mm, against 781 mm over 64 days at Médine in the west. In July and August the average maximum temperature there does not exceed 21.8 °C, and average humidity ranges from 82 to 85% depending on the month (climate sheets of the Mauritius Meteorological Services). With young children, check the ventilation and damp in any home you visit.

On 17 September 2026, our listings on the plateau included three three-bedroom apartments, at Rs 30,000 a month in Quatre Bornes, Rs 40,000 in Curepipe and Rs 45,000 in Floreal, and a furnished villa with a pool at Rs 83,000 in Quatre Bornes; nothing was available to rent in Moka or Vacoas that day. Vacoas-Phoenix for families

Vacoas-Phoenix has 34 of the 343 day-care centres on the official list of registered crèches (June 2025), in neighbourhoods such as Solferino, La Caverne, Bonne Terre, Glen Park, Quinze Cantons and Highlands, compared with 9 between Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches and 8 between Tamarin and Black River. The town is on the metro, has two Brightfield International School campuses and sits on the same line as Floreal (C-Care Darné) and Curepipe (Lycée La Bourdonnais). It also has the plateau’s climate: Vacoas is the wettest station in the table.

The north: Grand Baie, Pereybère, Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches

Both northern schools mentioned here are in Mapou. Northfields International School, at Labourdonnais Village, takes children from 18 months to 18 years, up to the International Baccalaureate; École du Nord, part of the French network, runs from nursery to lower secondary. For the French lycée years, children have to go to Moka or Curepipe.

C-Care Grand Baie, on the Mont Choisy road, has a 24-hour emergency department and paediatricians; if needed, its ambulance transfers patients to C-Care Wellkin or C-Care Darné on the plateau. The public regional hospital for the north is SSRN, in Pamplemousses. With no metro, journeys to Port Louis or Ebene are by road.

On 17 September 2026, the villas, houses and duplexes with three or more bedrooms in our listings ranged from Rs 45,000 a month (a four-bedroom house in Grand Gaube) to Rs 195,000 (a five-bedroom villa in Mont Choisy): two single-storey villas in Grand Baie at Rs 80,000 and Rs 100,000, four villas in Trou aux Biches from Rs 70,000 to Rs 160,000, and two villas with pools in Calodyne at Rs 90,000 and Rs 95,000. In Pereybère, two three-bedroom apartments were listed at Rs 43,000 and Rs 52,000.

The west: Tamarin, Black River, Flic en Flac

The west is the driest area: an average of 781 mm of rain a year at Médine, against almost 2,000 mm at Vacoas. English-language schooling is complete here: Telfair International Academy, on avenue des Dauphins in Tamarin, follows the British curriculum from 3 months to 15 years, then Westcoast International Secondary School in Cascavelle leads to IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate; both describe themselves as English-speaking schools. In the French system, École Paul & Virginie in Tamarin stops at primary: the network’s secondary schools are in Mapou, Moka and Curepipe.

C-Care Tamarin, at La Mivoie, is an outpatient centre linked to the C-Care Darné and Wellkin hospitals, with emergency care and an ambulance 7 days a week and some thirty specialities, including paediatrics. The public Yves Cantin community hospital in Black River takes emergencies but recorded no admissions in 2024-2025. The C-Care maternity units are on the plateau, in Moka and Floreal.

On 17 September 2026, our listings in Tamarin included a three-bedroom apartment with a garden at Rs 55,000 and two villas with three and four bedrooms at Rs 120,000; in La Preneuse, two three-bedroom houses at Rs 50,000 and Rs 80,000; in Black River, a four-bedroom house with a pool at Rs 65,000; and in Flic en Flac, three-bedroom apartments from Rs 55,000 to Rs 95,000 and villas from Rs 70,000 to Rs 175,000. The east: Belle Mare, Beau Champ, Poste Lafayette

The east is the most limited area for a child in the French system or at an international school. Clavis International Primary School opened a campus at Beau Champ in January 2025, following the IB primary programme; it started with the youngest classes and plans to add one year group each year. For secondary school, the schools mentioned here are in Moka, Curepipe, Mapou and Cascavelle. The Sir Anerood Jugnauth regional public hospital in Flacq was opened on 20 August 2024. Fuel, the reference station for the east, receives an average of 1,962 mm of rain a year.

Further south-east, around Pointe d’Esny and Mahébourg, none of the schools mentioned here has a campus. The Jawaharlal Nehru regional public hospital is at Rose-Belle, in the Grand Port district, and Mahébourg has a district hospital. Living in Mauritius as a family: what changes with your children’s ages and your jobs

With a baby or children under 6

Before school age, childcare means a crèche or care at home, and registered crèches are far more numerous in Vacoas-Phoenix (34) than between Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches (9) or between Tamarin and Black River (8). From 3 to 5, pre-primary school comes under the Early Childhood Care and Education Authority, which registers and supervises schools. The two C-Care hospitals with maternity and neonatal care are in Moka and Floreal, C-Care Grand Baie and C-Care Tamarin have paediatricians, and in the public sector paediatricians now follow children up to 16, rather than 12 as before. So the central plateau is the easiest option, the areas around Grand Baie and Tamarin remain practical, and the east and south-east mean more driving. With teenagers

At secondary level, the school decides the area. In the French system, the network’s only two lycées are in Curepipe (Lycée La Bourdonnais) and Helvetia, near Moka (Lycée des Mascareignes); on international programmes, Le Bocage in Moka, Northfields in Mapou and Westcoast in Cascavelle lead to the International Baccalaureate, and our guide to international schools in Mauritius helps you compare programmes. A teenager who wants to get around alone is better off living near the metro on the plateau, bearing in mind that it runs until 7 pm, and 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays; in the north and west, plan on a car and ask about school transport when you enrol.

When a parent works in Port Louis or Ebene

The central plateau is the only one of the four areas linked to Port Louis by metro. From the north, the route is the M2 motorway; from the west and east, the journey is also by car or bus. Day-to-day safety: what it changes when choosing a home

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs rates the whole of Mauritius at normal vigilance and describes it as a generally safe country, where assaults remain rare but have been increasing since 2025; it reports frequent burglaries and advises avoiding isolated places (travel advice, updated on 15 September 2026). For a family, this weighs less on the choice of region than on the choice of home: an isolated house calls for an alarm, a guard or close neighbours, whereas a residence or gated estate takes care of part of it.

The same advice notes that strong sea currents regularly cause drownings: with children, respect the no-swimming signs and check the weather before any boat trip. In the cyclone season, from November to April, the authorities can order people to stay at home for two to three days: stock up on water, batteries, torches and tinned food as soon as you move in.

Paperwork specific to families

Permits for your spouse and children

The spouse and children of an Occupation Permit or residence permit holder each apply for a dependent’s residence permit, online via the Economic Development Board platform, with the decision taken by the Passport and Immigration Office. Under the EDB guidelines, dependents are the spouse, parents and unmarried children aged 24 or under, including stepchildren and adopted children. The permit costs USD 400 per dependent, plus a non-refundable USD 50 processing fee charged on every application since 1 December 2025; it cannot run longer than the main holder’s permit and does not allow the holder to work. For a child under 12, a medical certificate from a local doctor is enough. The full application is covered in our article on the dependent permit in Mauritius.

For a family that buys, an investment of at least USD 375,000 in an IRS, RES or PDS scheme entitles the buyer and their dependents to a residence permit; for PDS, the EDB specifies that the spouse and children under 24 benefit for as long as the property is kept. The same threshold gives a residence permit to the buyer of an apartment in a building with at least two floors above the ground floor: see our properties open to foreign buyers. The Golden Visa guidelines, published by the EDB in August 2026, are aimed at investors who commit to investing at least USD 1 million in eligible sectors: this visa, valid for up to two years and renewable, covers the spouse and children, who can be enrolled in a private school. For a child aged 24 or any special case, have your situation confirmed by the EDB before you apply.

Healthcare and insurance

Childcare: crèche or a nanny at home

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare licenses and inspects crèches; its list of registered centres gives each one’s address and the expiry date of its registration certificate, so check the crèche you are visiting against it. Employing a nanny or housekeeper makes you an employer: the Mauritius Revenue Authority assigns a private individual an employer registration number (ERN) with their first social contributions return.

School enrolment before the lease

Ask early about available places, especially in nursery and primary, and get confirmation of enrolment before you commit to a home. Visit the area at two different times of day, including rush hour, and rent first if you want to test your choice over a school year before buying.
